“Meet Scarlett Epstein, BNF (Big Name Fan) in her online community of fanfiction writers, world-class nobody at Melville High. Her best (read: only) IRL friends are Avery, a painfully shy and annoyingly attractive bookworm, and Ruth, her weed-smoking, possibly insane seventy-three-year-old neighbor.
When Scarlett’s beloved TV show is canceled and her longtime crush, Gideon, is sucked out of her orbit and into the dark and distant world of Populars, Scarlett turns to the fanfic message boards for comfort. This time, though, her subjects aren’t the swoon-worthy stars of her fave series—they’re the real-life kids from her high school. And if they ever find out what Scarlett truly thinks about them, she’ll be thrust into a situation far more dramatic than anything she’s ever seen on TV…”
At first I was a little hesitant about this book as I would probably never bought it on my own. When I first read the description I just didn’t know what to think. A book revolving around fanfiction and high schoolers, what were they going to do with this? It’s not like I have anything against fanfiction though, as I write fanfiction myself and have been for a very long time. In fact, this book inspired me to get back into fanfiction writing. (Hello The 100 fandom.)
It just didn’t seem like an appealing story to me but boy was I wrong. This book was actually hilarious and very good. The story follows Scarlett Epstein, a smart and snarky teenager, as she navigates the chaos of high school through the world of fanfiction. She does her best to keep the two worlds separate but that doesn’t last for long. Her life revolves around the fanfiction community of her favorite TV show until it gets canceled leaving her community in distress. In order to keep her little community together she pens a new fanfic about the show with original characters…just so happens those original characters are real people, people she goes to school with and you know that won’t end well. The result is a hilarious story of drama and fanfiction.
What I didn’t like was the choppiness of the story, there was just too much going on. One second it was about her parent’s divorce then it was about her favorite tv show getting canceled then it was about high school drama then it was about fanfiction and more. Just a lot going on and not enough pages for all of it. The story would jump from place to place to cover all of these topics and more.
If you are a fan of fanfiction then this is definitely the book for you. It is filled with tons of references and parts of Scarlett’s own fanfiction. Yes, it can be a little stereotypical at times but there is nothing wrong with that. Scarlett Epstein Hates it Here is a fresh, funny story about a girl and some fanfiction and a whole lot of high school drama.
